Burlington, VT.  - Music is a universal language that connects us all. Lincoln-based musicians Raphael Groten and Rebecca Kodis use sound as a tool: a tool to heal, a tool to connect, and a tool to create peace in a busy world. Together they perform what they call ‘music as medicine’.

Tia Trudgeon joined them at the Burlington waterfront for a performance of their song Ease from their album Unity and a conversation about their approach to music.

“I’d love to pretend there’s some sort of big plan, but all the approaches are really just one approach,” Groten admitted. His graying dreadlocks framed a face with an easy smile and the patient eyes of someone who spends a lot of time around kids. “I used to fantasize about focusing on a single genre, like just being a Latin-jazz guitarist or something, but I don’t think I could really limit myself like that. I love funk. I love nature sounds. I love kids’ music. So why not just, you know, make those things?”

An intuitive sound healer and shamanic practitioner for 25 years, Raphael Groten joyfully lives off the grid in Vermont in a tiny house on wheels he designed and built with his partner, violinist Rebecca Kodis. Believing in the transformational power of “music as medicine,” the visionary composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and genre-transcendent musician has showcased his expansive, ever-burgeoning artistry on a multitude of eclectic recordings in the dozen years since his solo acoustic guitar debut album, Journey Home. Raphael’s music is devoted to cultivating peace, unity and healing within oneself and all life.
